1895 M. Verworn (full name? YYYY-YYYY ?) puts forward a conception of the organism as a ‘cellular state’, when the whole functioning of the organism is to be considered only as a complex of life activities of independent cells. The ‘cellular state’ of plant organisms, Verworn called a republic, whereas organization of the animal body he compared with monarchy. He thought that theoretical physiology could be only cell physiology.
